Our Roots in the Heart of Canterbury

Imagine a place where the air is incredibly clean, the soil is rich with minerals and the water flows from ancient glaciers. This is where the Midlands operation is planted: Mid-Canterbury in New Zealand’s South Island. 

It’s where the Midlands story began in 1990. These pristine conditions weren’t just beautiful; they were perfect for growing and producing top-quality products. From the very beginning, things took off quickly. We began with producing high-value seeds, then branched into various businesses, all connected to seed - leading to the eventual incorporation of Midlands Apiaries in 2006.

1990: Midlands Seed is officially formed.

1997: Midlands Holdings (MHL) is incorporated, marking a significant step in our growth.

2002: Midlands Farming & Properties comes into being, and MHL gains 50% ownership of Midlands Nutritional Oils.

2004: Midlands Contracting and Midlands Seed (Tasmania) are incorporated, expanding our reach.

2006: A pivotal year for honey – Midlands Apiaries is established through the acquisition of Symes Apiaries to support pollination of our high value seeds and to begin producing our own honey, including premium Mānuka Honey.

2012: Pure Oils New Zealand is incorporated, with MHL holding 30% ownership.

2016: Kaipak is incorporated, and MHL takes a 50% ownership stake.

2017: Midlands Bees is incorporated, and our apiary service operations are spun out from Midlands Apiaries.

2020: Midlands Nutritional Oils expands its core business, to include superfoods and is renamed Midlands Nutrition

2021: Midlands Properties Wanaka is incorporated.

2024: Ōmakō Ridge property purchased to produce high-value seeds in Wanaka

Midlands Apiaries is proud to be a premium honey supplier and packer, producing some of the world’s finest Mānuka honey products. These honey products come directly from the untouched lands and forests of New Zealand, a place known globally for its clean, green environment. 

Our experienced beekeepers strategically place hives in some of the most pristine and unpolluted regions across the country, to harvest monofloral Mānuka honey of the highest standard. As well as producing honey, we also operate a full-time buying team that sources honey from other areas of New Zealand, ensuring we can be a reliable Japanese Mānuka Honey supplier.

All honey is produced, packed and dispatched from our very modern, newly built packaging facility, further supporting our focus on quality and traceability at all stages of the supply chain for authentic New Zealand Honey.

International Quality Standards

We pride ourselves on consistently delivering the purest, highest-quality forms of Mānuka honey. Our expert team ensures that every batch meets rigorous standards for texture, viscosity and crystal size, producing what we call “liquid gold”. 

From initial harvest to the final metal detector check, our honey undergoes inspection at every production stage. Each batch is crafted to meet incredibly specific and stringent international standards, and is independently verified by accredited independent laboratories for purity. 

Our commitment to quality is reflected by numerous certifications, making us a trusted Japanese Mānuka honey supplier.

We guarantee monofloral honey by analysing pollen levels, colour, conductivity and sugar spectrums. All of our honey is 100% New Zealand made, harvested, packed, tested and certified - which makes our products eligible for the Fernmark stamp, signifying authentic New Zealand honey.

We ensure our products are non-GMO, halal-certified (by FIANZ) and Kosher (by Kiwi Kosher Licensing Authority). Furthermore, our honey is certified for the following:

Midlands enforces rigorous screening at every production stage, from harvest to final packaging, ensuring that all honey - especially monofloral Mānuka honey - meets exceptionally high standards for authenticity, potency and freshness. 

Our extensive testing protocols, validated by independent IANZ-certified laboratories, to guarantee compliance with the most stringent domestic and international standards. This commitment extends to quality assurance programmes, including the following:

Packing Facility

As New Zealand’s third-largest honey supplier, we took the step to build a state-of-the-art packing facility that is capable of producing over 24,000 jars of honey daily - or 4,236 metric tonnes a year. 

Our large-scale capacity ensures consistent, timely delivery of orders. Beyond mere packing, we offer a comprehensive suite of services, including custom honey blending, label design, retail-ready packaging and expert assistance with import requirements and shipping documentation. 

Our highly experienced in-house exports and marketing teams provide full-service support, from product conception to final delivery. 

Quality and food security are essential to the Midlands operation. Our purpose-built facility operates under a HACCP-based National Programme and is a certified SQF Level 3 food production facility, licensed and regularly inspected by New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI). 

With consistent scores of 97%, this guarantees stringent quality control throughout the entire production process, from precision blending to metal detection and secure tamper-evident sealing. All of this makes us a highly reliable Japanese Mānuka Honey supplier.

Advanced Technology

Here at Midlands, we’re dedicated to optimising our honey production by integrating a strong mix of advanced technology and streamlined processes. 

Every customer wants to know that the food products they buy are of the highest standards - which is why we’ve brought on board workers like Kendall, our process engineer who is responsible for introducing cutting-edge technology to the Midlands production process. 

Since Kendall first joined the team, Midlands implemented a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan, ensuring the equipment was regularly serviced and checked for potential problems. This greatly reduced the amount of downtime spent getting the systems back up and running. 

Through these changes, the level of reliability in every delivery of Mānuka honey has increased even more. Our customers hold an even deeper level of confidence that when they order a batch of honey from Midlands, it will arrive on time - every time - thanks to our refined production processes. 

Then, working with third-party businesses and analysing new possibilities within the technology sector, Kendall also introduced a range of machines that sets Midlands apart from other honey brands, as well as many New Zealand and international food suppliers. 

Among the introduced machinery was a cobot (collaborative robot), that stacks finished goods cartons onto pallets for the factory team. In another case, Midlands invested in a high-tech visual inspection system. This machine contains five cameras and surveys the honey production line, inspecting every jar and comparing them to a set of parameters that Midlands has predetermined. It can then pass or fail those jars accordingly.

Every piece of technology is designed to maintain high quality within every jar when dealing with food products produced for consumption. It means that our customers can, once again, trust with full confidence that their orders will arrive in great condition, on time and without any problems along the way.
