35 Years of History
Midlands Seed Founded
Midlands Seed was established to meet the growing global demand for reliable, high-quality seed production. This marked the beginning of our commitment to delivering premium genetics with consistent purity, performance, and traceability for international customers.
1990
Midlands Holdings Formed
With the rapid growth of the seed business, Midlands Holdings was created to strengthen governance and investment across the group. This structure ensured long-term stability, financial security, and the ability to scale sophisticated seed production programmes.
1997
Midlands Seed Farming Incorporated
Bringing farming operations under a formal business entity allowed Midlands to take greater control of crop agronomy, land management, and quality systems. This step improved consistency across all seed crops, ensuring customers receive reliable, high-performing seed, year after year.
2002
Midlands Properties Incorporated
Acquisition of Symes Apiaries to ensure management and timeliness of crop pollination for high value seed crops
2002
50% Acquisition of Midlands Nutrition
A strategic investment into Midlands Nutrition (formerly known as Midlands Nutritional Oil, and previously Oil Seed Extractions) expanded Midlands’ expertise in oilseed crops. This deepened R&D, agronomy insight, and processing capability, benefiting customers seeking reliable production of niche and high-value oilseed varieties.
2002
Midlands Contracting Incorporated
The creation of Midlands Contracting introduced in-house expertise in precision agriculture, land preparation, drilling, cultivation, and harvesting. This investment ensured total control over critical field operations, reducing risk for customers and improving seed purity and performance.
2004
Midlands Seed (Tasmania) Incorporated
Establishing a Tasmanian production base unlocked counter-season seed production, giving customers faster seed-to-market cycles, expanded capacity, and supply security across hemispheres. This move strengthened Midlands’ position as a trusted global partner for hybrid and specialty seed multiplication.
2004
Midlands Secures Full Ownership of Midlands Nutrition
Gaining 100% ownership allowed Midlands to integrate oilseed production more deeply with processing and quality assurance. This resulted in greater oversight of end-to-end quality, particularly important for Flaxseed and Hemp.
2004
Midlands Apiaries Established
While focused on honey, the acquisition of Symes Apiaries brought deeper expertise in pollination systems, an essential component for certain seed crops. This strengthened pollination reliability for growers and supported higher, more consistent seed yields.
2006
Midlands Bees Incorporated
By separating the beekeeping arm into a dedicated service business, Midlands enhanced its ability to supply professional, reliable pollination support. Seed customers benefited from consistent pollination systems that underpin successful hybrid and open-pollinated seed production.
2017
Midlands Properties Wanaka Incorporated
The addition of the Wanaka property expanded Midlands’ access to high-performing land in one of New Zealand’s most reliable seed-growing regions. This ensured long-term capacity, diversified climatic zones, and enhanced production stability for global seed customers.
2021
Ōmakō Ridge Property Purchased
The acquisition of Ōmakō Ridge in Central Otago secured additional premium farmland ideally suited for specialised seed production. With its unique climate, high sunlight hours, and exceptional seed-growing conditions, Ōmakō Ridge strengthens Midlands’ ability to deliver high-purity seed at scale for decades to come.
