About our Marrowfat Peas

Midlands Seed is  a premium Marrowfat Pea supplier. As an established company producing a wide  variety of arable foods, Midlands is proud of the quality.

Product Information

Midlands is a Marrowfat Pea supplier for businesses as an ingredient for further production. Often grown on forward contract (preordered 12-18 months in advance and grown specifically for you) we supply you with premium quality bulk options for your brand.

Marrowfat Peas contain protein necessary for tissue building and repair, which contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and bone normality. They also have high levels of dietary fibre both soluble and insoluble. Marrowfat Peas are also a good source of Iron, Phosphorus and Vitamin B1, which also contribute to the repair, maintenance, and growth of muscle as well as bone health.  This makes Marrowfat Peas the optimum choice for a range of snack food including wasabi peas.

We grow our Marrowfat Peas on the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand. Our latitude, pristine air quality, consistent water supply for irrigation, and exceptional soil types allow us to produce superior peas.

Our quest for quality and a competitive edge is ongoing to ensure that our products meet the highest international standards. With quality assurance programmes that maintain control at every point along the production process.

Our extensive investment in research and breeding programmes ensures we deliver the best seeds with the best genetics, maximising quality, size, and yield. Our agronomy experts then maintain a watchful eye over crops from the planted seed through to harvest, providing the right growing advice and maintaining best practice to improve seed quality.

From planted seed to final product, we have complete traceability. Our plant-based production focus ensures we give back to the environment. Carefully planning crop rotations to improve soil health and biodiversity and producing only what is needed to balance the requirements of the land. Our pulses are produced in a responsible and environmentally way.

Australian Marrowfat Peas are also available.

Is there a difference between New Zealand grown Marrowfat Peas and those from the UK or Canada?

New Zealand calm growing season, temperate climate, diurnal temperature, regular rainfall and reliable access to water for irrigation provide the right environment for our peas to grow. The UK and Canada can face climate extremes from cold to hot and dry where irrigation is restricted making peas shutdown faster.

Our peas can be traced right back to the paddock they were grown, with each paddock dried and stored separately for full traceability. What’s more, we can trace our family tree of seed lines back 30 years.

Frequently asked questions

Marrowfat Peas FAQ's

Welcome to our FAQ section, where we answer the most common questions about our products and their uses. From nutritional benefits to processing tips, we aim to provide clear, practical information to help you make informed decisions—whether you’re a food manufacturer, distributor, or ingredient buyer.

Are Marrowfat Peas good for you?

Yes. Marrowfat peas are high in protein and dietary fiber, making them excellent for supporting muscle growth, digestion, and overall health. They also provide essential vitamins and minerals, including iron, magnesium, and B vitamins.

What is a Substitute for Marrowfat Peas?

Depending on the recipe, you can substitute marrowfat peas with other dried peas such as green split peas, or in some cases, chickpeas or lima beans. Keep in mind that texture and cooking times may vary. For food manufacturers and ingredient buyers, marrowfat peas can be substituted with, or marrowfat peas can be substitued for other legumes, depending on your product needs. Options include Blue Peas, White Peas, or Red and Yellow Lentils. These alternatives can provide similar texture, protein content, and processing performance, making them suitable for use in extruded snacks, pulse-based flours, or other food products. Substitution choice will depend on the desired color, flavor, and functional properties in your final product.

What is the difference between peas and marrowfat peas?

Marrowfat peas are mature, dried green peas that have been allowed to fully ripen in the field, giving them a firmer texture and slightly sweeter flavor compared to regular garden or fresh peas. They are ideal for soups, stews, mushy peas, extruded snacks (like wasabi peas) and bulk processing, while fresh or garden peas are usually tender, sweet, and eaten cooked or raw.

Which peas are the healthiest?

Most dried peas are nutritionally similar, offering high fibre and plant protein. Blue, White, and Marrowfat peas all deliver good nutritional value, and the choice usually depends on colour, flavour profile, and processing performance.
